Why is this especially important for girls?

Many girls and gender-expansive youth face real challenges in sports, from lack of access to the right gear to team cultures that value competition over connection. On top of that, they often carry unspoken expectations about how they “should” act, which can make them hesitant to take risks or learn from mistakes. Coaches play a powerful role in shifting this—by creating supportive environments where athletes feel safe to grow, stumble, and try again. When belonging and growth mindset are part of the culture, young people build the confidence, resilience, and joy that keep them in the game and set them up for success in life.
