Girls Leadership, in partnership with Barbie, conducted a research study with girls in Kindergarten to 5th grade. This project was a youth-led research study organized by the members of Girls Leadership’s Girl Advisory Board (GAB). GAB members conducted focus groups to learn how girls in elementary school see themselves, their hopes for the future, and the challenges they encounter. They were curious to know how girls’ perspectives are shaped by their experiences as Black, Latinx, AAPI, Indigenous, and White girls. Download the She Knows Her Power report.
Key findings include:
- Young girls have experienced harm as a result of rigid gender expectations and bias.
- Relationships matter, and girls’ families and friendships are places where they experience belonging.
- Girls have expansive notions of leadership that include advocating for their beliefs and sharing power with others.
