Meet Our Summer Program Director
Iris Perkins is dedicated to empowering girls and women through community activism and her professional endeavors. Iris is a fierce advocate of transformative and intersectional approaches of communication through the performance and practices of everyday life. Born and raised in California, Iris earned her BA in Communication Studies from San Jose State University. Iris is a member of the American Camp Association.
In 2013, Iris began volunteering at Bay Area Girls Rock Camp, a grassroots organization which empowers youth through music, workshops, and community. Shortly after joining rock camp, Iris decided to dedicate her professional career to promoting and fostering self-confidence, creativity, and teamwork among girls. In 2017, she earned her MA in Communication Studies with an emphasis on performance studies, Chicana Theory, and Black Feminist Thought, exploring the possibilities of intersectional identity. Iris is delighted to join Girls Leadership and support the emotional and social development of girls while empowering and emboldening them to become leaders in their communities and the world they live in. When she is not slaying in the professional playing field, Iris can be found dancing in the company SF Loose Change, napping with her dog, Bodhi, or camping with her partner in his ‘86 VW Westfalia.
