Culturally Responsive Mindsets Professional Development Workshop

Culturally Responsive Mindsets Professional Development Workshop

Culturally Responsive Mindsets Professional Development Workshop

As Emily Style, lifelong teacher and Co-Founder of the National SEED Project says, “Half the curriculum walks into the room when the students do.” Cultural responsiveness is the ability to incorporate inclusive practices that honor the voices and experiences of all youth. This is particularly important for educators and youth-serving professionals teaching social-emotional learning and leadership as these skills are deeply rooted in culture and values; and impacted by the power difference of adult and youth. Culturally responsive practices build trust, a sense of belonging, and authentic connection and communication. The connection built from culturally responsive practices is the foundation of a productive, and even joyous, advisory class or youth development program. In this workshop participants will learn, understand, and be able to:

  • Explore the different cultural assumptions they bring into the classroom or program, and the impact of these assumptions on the youth they serve
  • Identify and value the diversity of cultural experiences and perspectives that the youth bring into the classroom or program
  • Implement culturally responsive practices to deepen connection with youth and create spaces that promote growth and learning

Included in the training are four lessons you can use – or share with others – right away to engage more authentically and build trust with your youth:

  • Artifact
  • Who’s In The Room?
  • Individualism/Collectivism
  • Personal Mapping

In addition to the above, this workshop will cover concepts such as unconscious bias and interconnectivity as well as tools for identifying the ways in which dominant culture shows up in our individual behavior and institutions. By creating culturally responsive environments, we center and value the experiences of all our youth and interrupt patterns of bias.

The sessions are designed for educators, administrators, district leaders, youth-serving professionals, counselors, and formal volunteers who work regularly with youth in grades 6–12.

Is this training and the curriculum applicable in coed classrooms and afterschool spaces?
Absolutely. Our training and curriculum were built with the voices of girls and gender-expansive youth at the center, but the impact reaches all youth. Educators and youth professionals consistently use them in mixed-gender classrooms and group settings with great success.
