Brave Space Groundwork

In this professional development workshop, we’ll discuss what educators and youth workers told us they want to know: how to create brave spaces and center the SEL needs of their students at this time. This Brave Space Groundwork workshop is for educators, administrators, school counselors, CBO staff, after-school staff, and other youth-serving professionals.

Receive the following four lessons you can use right away to nurture warm and authentic partnerships with youth and center racial and gender equity in social emotional learning:

  • Modeling vulnerability through hot seat
  • Generating community agreements
  • Honoring youth voice
  • Identifying comfort zones

Participants will:

  • Define “brave space” while gathering best practices on how to create a brave space in their classrooms
  • Experience and use practices, lessons, and activities that cultivate a brave space for youth
  • Identify how brave spaces foster community and accountability, and how to mitigate harm

A foundational piece of our work at Girls Leadership is to create brave spaces — communities where girls feel seen, accepted, and loved by peers and adults — in person and online. Brave spaces are crucial because they allow for vulnerability, the safety to take risks, mess up, reflect, and recover, all while still belonging in the community. How can any of us learn and grow as humans and leaders if we don’t have the support of relationships that give us this ability to be brave?

Brave spaces are the environments in which youth feel heard, seen, valued, and supported as they explore challenging social-emotional topics. This is differentiated from “safe spaces” in that there is inherent risk and conflict involved in developing our identities and sharing them with others. This experiential module will equip educators with lessons, instructional practices, and mindsets to create brave spaces for their youth.

“So far, this has been the best workshop I have been to. Why? Because they made it safe; gave us data and taught us important concepts through visual & auditory tools; had us reflect; was interactive and gave us tangible lessons to implement in our work environment. Hit all markers! Thank you. ”
