This try it tomorrow tool is great for elementary aged learners.
These playful and reflective prompts help youth practice giving and receiving attention in ways that make everyone feel seen and valued.
Materials
- Paper
- Crayons/colored pencils
- Talking piece for taking turns (soft ball, smooth stone)
- Heart Talk Prompts (see below)
Instruction
- Invite students to sit in a circle.
- Ask: What makes a good listener? Use the answers to this question to remind the group that listeners focus on the speaker and stay quiet.
- Ask one of the Heart Talk prompts. Invite someone to share their answer.
- Continue with the prompts until everyone has a turn.

Get to Know You
- What is something you are really good at?
- What’s your favorite thing to do when you are happy?
Connection
- What helps you feel better when you are upset?
- Finish this sentence: A way to be a kind friend is…
Reflection
- What does it feel like when someone listens to you?
- What is something you want to get better at this year?
Wild Cards
- Draw your best friend using your non-dominant hand.
- Make up a secret handshake with a partner.
Quick Tips
- Put Heart Talk prompts on cards and let students pick a prompt from a category.
- Have students share in pairs if they are able to work independently.
- Have everyone participate with the “Wild Cards”.
