“My story deserves to be shared and so does yours.”

There is no national study of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) girls and gender expansive youth–yet. When Girls Leadership started to address this four years ago we were told that this demographic group was too diverse to understand. We were told that this hasn’t been done because it can’t be done. Today our Youth Research Council is leading all of us to a new future where the first national study of AAPI girls is a reality, where their leadership story is told, and their power is celebrated.

Recently, they’ve helped us to develop and promote a survey on how AAPI girls and gender-expansive youth view leadership. To be successful they need 4,000 AAPI, or AANHPI girls and gender expansive youth 14 – 22 years old to take 15 minutes to take this survey.

To get the word out, members of the Youth Research Council shared stories of challenges they face in developing as leaders. Nikita and Kathleen shared with us the frustration of being overlooked or misunderstood based on stereotypes about their identities.

However, they also talked about using the power of their voices to tear down stereotypes and advocate for themselves and their communities.

“What really drew me to this study was the opportunity to create generational change.”

Girls Leadership is grateful to Nikita, Kathleen, and the whole YRC, and we hope that you will join them in speaking up! Our survey will be open for one more week, until May 31! If you or an AAPI girl or gender-expansive youth you know has 15 minutes to share their thoughts, we want to help the world to hear it. Take our completely confidential survey here.
