Our mission is to help girls find and use their voice so there’s nothing more moving than hearing powerful, insightful words directly from our girls! During last week’s online summer camp with 4th and 5th graders, several themes emerged through their positive self-talk mantras. These mantras are ones all of us would do well with carrying forward in our daily lives. (And speaking of girls’ voices, if you know of a K–5’er who would like to share her thoughts on what it means to be a girl today, check out this focus group opportunity that ends July 28!)
Mantra #1: Start from a positive place
How we set intentions in life matters tremendously. One of our campers encourages starting from a positive place with the mantra, “Just know, today is going to be a good day.”
Mantra #2: Practice confidence
Challenges are inevitable; we saw this reality play out at a new level during the height of the pandemic. Campers encouraged reconnecting to their confident mindset through simple mantras such as “I can handle it, I am a tough cookie.” and “You can do it and you will do great.” Another girl acknowledged the importance of not giving up: “Remember, you can really do anything! Even if you can’t do it the first time doesn’t mean you can’t do it at all.”
Mantra #3: Breathing matters
Body awareness and the importance of breathing is one of the messages that runs through all of our programs for families and educators. One camper’s mantra involves pairing breath with positive self-talk: “Take deep breaths and repeat that you can do it and you probably can.” Another girl identified how important breathing is in the face of negative energy: “I have a lot of negative energy and I mostly worry, so the problem is I don’t really have any positive self-talk when it happens. So [then I] take a breath and just breathe.”
