Belonging in Sports

BELONGING IN SPORTS:

CREATING THE FOUNDATION FOR GIRLS TO HEAL AND THRIVE AS A TEAM

Belonging is the first step in making sure players feel heard, seen, and supported. Girls Leadership’s “Belonging in Sports” is a private training that will equip coaches and youth sports professionals with equity-centered tools and resources to create a foundation of belonging, wellness, community, and leadership for their players both on and off the court.

WHO IS IT DESIGNED FOR?

For coaches, athletic directors, community-based organization youth development staff, and team parents of middle and high school girls and gender-expansive youth in sports.

CO-CREATED WITH GIRLS

Girls Leadership listened to girl athletes across the country, building an understanding of the challenges the girls faced, and working in collaboration with those girls as they led in the development of solutions to those challenges. Our “Belonging in Sports” training centers the knowledge, wisdom, and power of girl athletes, ensuring that the activities and best practices shared meet their needs.

What will coaches learn?

This experiential training will equip coaches and youth sports development staff with activities, coaching tips, and mindsets to create a strong foundation of belonging, wellness, and community for their teams.
Learn how to cultivate a sense of belonging for every girl and gender-expansive youth on your team, so that players can experience emotional wellbeing and practice effective and sustainable teamwork. Includes Girls Leadership’s professional development modules Brave Space Groundwork and Trauma Informed Care to Healing Centered Engagement.

  1. Understand the barriers girl athletes face in sports and athletics.
  2. Explore their role as influencers beyond basketball skills, including impact on players’ identity and value development, wellness, and leadership development.
  3. Practice and build confidence with tactical strategies for creating a tight-knit and healthy team, firmly grounded in gender and racial equity and healing-centered approaches.
  4. Practice making the key mental shifts that will enable us to reimagine our relationships with young people as well as our vocation.
