Girls Leadership equips girls with the skills to exercise the power of their voice. Our programs include Girl & Grownup workshops, a residential summer program, professional development trainings for educators, and parent education presentations.
By engaging the fundamental concepts of the Girls Leadership curriculum, we work together to ensure that campers have fun while learning skills to manage their friendships and relationships. This is an opportunity to be part of a collective staff to allow girls to explore their personal identity to better understand who they are, what they believe, and how they can create meaningful change in their relationships and community. Girls Leadership seeks an experienced Director of Wellness dedicated to girls’ social and emotional development to work at its residential summer program at Mills College in Oakland CA, from June 22 – August 6, 2019. The Girls Leadership Summer Program is divided into three sessions; 2 ten-day sessions serving 6th grade through 8th grade and 1 fifteen-day session serving 9th grade through 12th grade.
The Girls Leadership Director of Wellness joins a team of outstanding professionals at a nationally recognized nonprofit. The Director of Wellness will work at the cutting edge of thinking and practice for girls’ social and emotional development and experience a unique opportunity to teach and mentor girls outside of the student-teacher structure.
The Director of Wellness receives one day off every 5 days and one day off in between sessions. Working as a member of the Girls Leadership staff is a unique, exciting and demanding opportunity. Creating the Girls Leadership community requires hard work, long hours, and significant commitment. Staff must maintain a high level of energy, patience, professionalism, and compassion from early morning wake-up to evening staff meetings. This intense work schedule requires stamina and dedication. The result is an incredibly rewarding job transforming the lives of adolescent girls.
- Support a safe, nurturing, inclusive community that celebrates each girl
- Role model the values and skills of the Girls Leadership curriculum
- Foster a safe and comfortable residential community
- Provide direct counseling service support to individual girls and provide recommendations to the program staff regarding girl wellness
- Lead daily meetings with grade level program staff to review girl wellness
- Attend daily management meeting
- Work with staff and Girls Leadership families to collect, organize and inventory medication on the first day of the program, and return medications to families at the end of the season
- Maintain a safe, clean and organized Wellness Center
- Distribute medication at 8 am and 9:45 pm daily (as well as other times throughout the day)
- Offer “office hours” from 12:45 – 1:45 four days a week
- Provide resources for staff to help address girls’ needs
- Maintain and document records of girl wellness
- Execute communication with parents and families as needed
- Make appointments, when necessary, with medical/dental personnel in the community and accompany girls to the appointment
- Maintain first-aid kits and ensure their distribution for off-campus trips
- Accompany and support campers at the ropes course up to three times
- Participate in program activities such as on campus field day, beach day and off-campus trips
- Work closely with Director of Residential Life and Senior Residential Counselor and management team to monitor and care for the overall wellness of girls
- Serve as a mandated reporter
- Be CPR and First Aid certified
- Participate in regular staff meetings to debrief lessons and discuss girls’ progress
- Engage in seven full days of staff training at Mills College, June 22 – 28
- Engage in two full days of clean up, pack up and staff evaluation at Mills College August 5&6
- Setup Wellness Center and support arrival of summer staff, June 18-21 (full time position only)

** Note: The Director of Wellness is also on-call to provide girl wellness support, including after 9 pm
Bachelor’s degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or relevant filed. At least three years of experience working clinically with young people, OR three years of experience overseeing student wellness in a residential setting, such as a boarding school or summer camp. Employment is contingent upon a clear background check. Employee must be CPR and First Aid trained by June 21, 2019. Must have a valid driver’s license and eligibility for insurance with agency’s vehicle. Graduate degree is preferred.

- Be open to and participate in professional observation and regular feedback;
- Have experience working with and mentoring colleagues.
- $6,000 for 6 weeks of summer program inclusive of staff, June 22 – August 6, 2019
- Room and board at Mills College for June 22 – August 6, 2019
- Total travel reimbursement, for arriving to campus in June and leaving in August, is not to exceed $200 total if traveling beyond a 150 mile radius one-way from Mills College. Point of origin and distance needs to be confirmed with the Summer Program Director before travel.
