About Girls Leadership
Girls Leadership equips girls with the skills to exercise the power of their voice. We work with girls, parents, caregivers, educators, and coaches to ensure lasting impact by teaching the practices of assertive self-expression and strengthening emotional intelligence.
Girls Leadership was founded in 2001 by bestselling author and girl-expert Rachel Simmons and educator Simone Marean. Together, they created a critically acclaimed program and curriculum that delivers workshops, a residential summer program, day camps and teacher training. We are growing rapidly, driven by a three-year strategic plan to expand our work across lines of difference, such as race and class, to impact as many girls as possible.
About the Position
Girls Leadership is seeking part-time Educators dedicated to improving the social and emotional development of girls from all backgrounds. Educators should be willing to teach school-year workshops in at least one of these Bay Area sub-regions:
- Mid-Peninsula (Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Portola Valley, San Carlos)
- Northern Peninsula (Burlingame/San Mateo)
- South Bay (Los Altos, Mountain View, San Jose)
Girls Leadership Educators join a team of outstanding professionals at a nationally recognized nonprofit. Educators will work at the cutting edge of thinking and practice for girls’ social and emotional development; learn and exercise the techniques of educational theater; embody our core values of Authentic Communication, Courageous Growth, Equity, and Play; and become a certified Girls Leadership Educator.
Candidates must be at least 25 years of age and must have experience teaching young people through interactive lessons. A graduate degree in education, arts in education, psychology or similar, is preferred.
The foundation of the Girls Leadership curriculum is educational theater. All interested Educators should apply. We prefer applicants with experience teaching arts-integrated curricula, specifically theater. We also seek Educators with experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds and who are bilingual in Spanish. As part of the application process, we ask you to facilitate a short original lesson with a small group of people.
The ideal candidate will:
- Be passionate about the empowerment and leadership of girls from all backgrounds
- Demonstrate the ability to create an inclusive community through intentional language use and role modeling
- Relate to and effectively teach girls from diverse backgrounds in the K-8th grade age range, in addition to their parents/caregivers
- Demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion practices
- Demonstrate social and emotional intelligence
- Be comfortable with professional observation and regular feedback
- Possess experience executing lesson plans and project units (creating lesson/unit plans is a plus!)
- Have at least two years experience teaching youth in academic or recreational settings
- Possess excellent communication skills
- Be responsible and self-motivated, as well as tech responsive (this position is satellite and part-time in nature, and includes timely submission of paperwork, prompt email responses, navigation of Google Calendar and DropBox)
- Work well with others as part of a team and be invested in building community amongst Educators
- Approach problems creatively and proactively
- Be bilingual in Spanish (a plus!)
- Be able to be playful and goofy when teaching and have fun with parents/caregivers and girls!
- Travel to revolving school and community sites in one of the sub-regions listed above – please consider distance and travel during peak hours before applying. Workshops typically run after school, between the hours of 4-8p and occasionally on weekend days
- Be available to teach programs at least two weeknights per week, September through June and possibly one week of day camp during spring break or in the summer months
Year-Round Teaching Requirements & Compensation for Accepted Applicants
Initial Training: Two-day spring 2019 weekend training 3/23-3/24 (no compensation and at no charge)
Ongoing Support: Additional training and year-round coaching by regional Program Manager (not compensated)
First Stage: Observation of a Girl-Grownup workshop series (four weekly workshop sessions without compensation and at no charge). K/1 workshop session is 60 minutes per week for four weeks, 2/3 and 4/5 is 90 minutes per week, and 6-8th grade is two hours per week.
Second Stage: One time only co-teaching of a Girl-Grownup workshop series (four weekly workshop sessions compensated at $50 per session)
Third Stage: Solo teaching (each workshop session compensated at the rate of $123, $155 or $188 depending on session length dictated by curriculum grade levels). The Educator teaching rate is approximately $65 per hour not including prep. Prep is compensated at $25 for each week.
The training timeline for new Educators varies based on Educator availability during evening hours, and the demand for workshops within their specific sub-region. Once trained, the frequency of workshops Educators teach will also be dependent on availability and demand.
- Available for the “Teach Back Interview Night” (second interview) Wednesday, February 27, 2019 from 7:00-9:30pm at our headquarters in Oakland, CA.
- Available for “New Educator Training” in Spring 2019, March 23 (9am-5pm) & March 24 (9am-3pm)
- Upon successful completion of training, observation, and co-teaching we aim for the teaching of solo workshops to begin in Fall 2019 (timing is dependent on scheduling and availability).
