Assistant Summer Program Director, Adolescence Job Description:

This is a transitional position that will work at the Girls Leadership Summer Camp during the summer of 2020 in a stipended role and transition into the full time salaried position of Summer Program Director, Adolescence at the close of the summer camp season 2020.

The Assistant Summer Program Director will work in one of the following seasonal positions:  Teaching Counselor, Wellness Coordinator or Director of Residential life depending on experience and qualifications.

The Summer Program Director, Adolescence reports to the Chief Program Officer and is a member of the Programs Department team.

The primary job responsibilities include managing the residential Summer Program and post-camp programs, curriculum development, evaluation and teaching.

The Summer Program Director is also responsible for overseeing the Girls Advisory Board and managing their participation in the organization and keeping abreast of trends and research associated with adolescent girls.

The Summer Program Director, Adolescence will:

Use Design Thinking to develop, adapt, and innovate Girls Leadership residential Summer Program culturally-responsive curriculum and programming. 

  • Lead the development, writing, piloting and editing of original and current curricula in order to meet summer program goals;
  • Support the National Program Team with the development and updating of programming that will reach broader and more diverse populations of girls through new and existing partnerships;
  • Research and commit to ongoing professional development of experiential teaching methods including arts integrated practices (educational theater), the youth development approach, trauma-informed approaches, cooperative learning, tinkering, outdoor education and others;

Oversee planning and execution of Summer Program

  • Follow, update and inform the summer program year round timeline;
  • Ensure maintenance of best practices as established by the American Camping Association;
  • Oversee planning, evaluation and assessment in coordination with the summer program logic model and Chief Program Officer  to ensure that internal assessment outcomes are analyzed;
  • Create and oversee the execution of summer program schedules and operational systems, including first days, intersession and last days of the summer program;
  • Design and oversee the summer program crisis plan;
  • Oversee and manage residential life daily at the summer program, including trips and weekends and identifying vendors;
  • Evaluate each summer overall in regards to girl and staff experiences, as well as operational systems, and the budget summarizing in a fall narrative report;
  • Support and coordinate program operations administration by managing the program budget (oversee purchasing of program materials), vendor contracts, scholarship application and award process, registration and payments, ensuring that all deadlines are met;
  • Oversee all summer program communications and customer support;
  • Support summer program any fundraising campaigns;

Oversee girl experience

  • Maintain girl applications and financials spreadsheets to support accurate payments specifically with finance department;
  • Prepare and oversee online application and registration system for the upcoming summer program season;
  • Recruit, interview, and manage girl applications; develop and oversee the relationship between Girls Leadership, girls and their families;
  • Work closely with specific partner schools to identify, invite, interview girls and families for the summer program;
  • Process all summer program registrations and organize accompanying paperwork;

Oversee Summer Program staff experience

  • Advertise, recruit, interview, hire, train, manage and maintain summer program staff, including initiating, collecting and confirming required staff paperwork;
  • Plan, co-facilitate and lead summer program staff training;
  • Supervise and evaluate ongoing summer program staff performance and oversee the end of summer staff evaluation and review processes;
  • Foster community building to generate a welcoming, fun, inclusive team environment for staff.

Oversee Girl Advisory Board 

  • Oversee the management of a Girls Advisory Board to continually listen to the voices of girls to inform curriculum and program development;
  • Attend and manage the weekly Girl Advisory Board meetings;
  • Coordinate and execute the Girl Advisory Board in-person and the fundraising associated with their costs


Minimum qualifications:

  • Passionate about girls’ empowerment and leadership
  • Experience developing culturally responsive curricula and programs
  • Knowledge and experience with trauma-informed teaching strategies and practices
  • Several years of recent middle and/or secondary school age youth-based learning experience, including experience teaching
  • Several years of experience serving diverse populations of youth (socio-economic class, cultures, communities, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation)
  • At least three years of residential summer camp or other residential experience
  • Excellent verbal communication and written skills including public speaking presentations, writing occasional reports, drafting letters and informational and succinct client emails, video conferencing and conducting interviews
  • Experience managing teams, coaching, giving and receiving feedback
  • Ability to approach problems creatively and proactively and remain flexible and patient in the face of time pressure and multiple demands
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills and experience mediating groups
  • Ability to be timely, communicate status updates and maintain follow through with set deadlines
  • Responsible, self-motivated, flexible, and able to work both on a team and as an independent self-starter
  • Detail-oriented, with a high degree of organization, creativity and resourcefulness;

Preferred qualifications:

  • At least one to two years of management and administrative work experience overseeing teachers, counselors or youth service providers
  • Experience organizing and conducting educational focus groups and/or needs assessment with young people from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience with Design Thinking
  • Background in Educational Theater and arts-integrated education
  • Savviness and comfort with using MS Excel, MS Word, Google Drive, Skype, Google Hangout, some social media such as Facebook, and learning database platforms including Salesforce and Thriva (Active Network). Advanced degree in education, counseling, organizational management or similar field
  • Advanced degree in education, social work/counseling, organizational management or similar field

 Compensation & Benefits:

Assistant Summer Program Director: This is a stipended position and the compensation is dependent on the Summer Program: range of $6,000 – $7,000 for 6 weeks.

Director of Summer Program, Adolescence: This is a full-time exempt position. The starting salary range for this position is $70,000 – $75,000. Benefits include health insurance (99% coverage for employee), optional dental/vision, unlimited paid time off with supervisor pre-approval, separate sick time, 11 holidays per year, and a 401(k) plan available after one year of service.
