Joe Tarasco is a New York native and Director of Operations for Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group. Over his 15 year tenure with the company, he’s held positions spanning all aspects of the business – first a line cook, then sous chef, then executive chef – and is now responsible for the financial success and culinary relevance of USHG’s Roman brands – Maialino, Marta, Caffe Marchio, and Vini e Fritti.
Joe’s passion for hospitality and Italian food began at an early age, in the kitchen with his Italian-born grandmother, Emma, who ingrained her family recipes and mandatory Sunday suppers in the family. After earning a bachelor’s degree from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, Joe’s restaurant career began in the front-of-house at a local Italian restaurant in Cold Spring, New York, before heading behind the scenes at places like Prime Meats and Gramercy Tavern. He joined the opening team at Maialino, and grew into positions that drew upon his deep knowledge of Italian food and culture to open Marta, Vini e Fritti, and Caffe Marchio.
Joe lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Gretchen Thomas, the events director at Threes Brewing, and spend their time at home doing much of what they love about their work – cooking for and entertaining friends and loved ones.
